Accidents...
Millions
of automobile accidents occur in the United States each year,
causing damage to property, and worse, injuring you or a loved
one. Many people, especially in minor accidents, file a
report with the police and their insurance carrier and leave it
at that. A lot of times they pay any related expenses
directly out of their own pocket. At this point, a minor
accident has become a major expense to your pocketbook.
If another driver is negligent,
you can not only lose your life or the life of a love one, but
you can also suffer physical injury and unnecessary financial
and emotional
stress. To win a suit against another driver it is
necessary to show that they were negligent, which means that
they must have failed to act reasonably and in a manner which
respects the safety of other drivers.
If you are involved in an
accident, NOTIFY THE POLICE
IMMEDIATELY!! Also follow these guidelines.
- Write down the names,
addresses, telephone numbers, and license numbers of persons
involved in the accident and any witnesses who saw what
happened. Also write down the license plate number and
state of each vehicle involved.
- DO
NOT ADMIT FAULT. Do not discuss the
accident with anyone except the police, your insurance
agent, or your attorney.
- Notify your attorney and
your insurance agent at once.
After the accident, during the
settlement period, document your time lost from work, any
prescriptions as a result of the accident, any doctor's visited
or any medical bills related to the accident. The law
permits you to seek recovery after an accident to "make you
whole again."
