Another inherit right as an American citizen is your Fifth Amendment right to remain silent when you are arrested or accused of a crime.  You should not say anything until you have spoken with a lawyer.  We understand that when someone is accused, their first thoughts are that the police do not understand the full facts of the case, so you want to tell them.
